Replaced the PNP but that did NOT fix the issue.


Mechanic says Torque Converter Lockup, so I hope it's just the solenoid.

Where do I get a replacement? Installation procedures? =( I think it's S1 and S2? Or just S2? Not sure where I remember that from. =(

I am very sorry to hear that it did not fix the problem. Did you try replacing the tranny fluid completely?

 

It is a pain to replace the soleniods.
You will have to drop the subframe some to remove the front black cover on the transmission.
Not sure where to buy from besides the Dealer.

 

I am just wondering about how the problem was diagnosed. Auto tranny jobs are so so so expensive here that I would change all the fluids and the filter before even taking it to a tranny specialist. Maybe in the US it is not that expensive.

An auto tranny specialist makes more money here than a senior software developer.

Because most of the time they say "You need a new transmission"[8D].

Modern automatic transmission is as complicated as IT/network technology. Very often they are black box and one has to have high-quality training & experience to properly diagnose & repair automatic transmissions due to the complicated hydraulic & electronic control systems.

Volvo factory manual does not recommend repair on the transmission. But if it were for Tech, I would pay him to do whatever he wishes to do to it.

Hey tech (or anyone), what do I want to ask the dealer for? I have an image from a shop manual that shows S1 and S2 on the outside of the transmission, I think. With a lift, my mechanic shouldn't have a problem replacing it right? Anyone remember the price for the S1 and S2 solenoids? I want to order them asap! =)

(I accidently cleared the code(s) in A1 and A2 when I got the car. Just did the other modules and nothing related to my problem found (cleared all codes) =)

 

What is the code that keeps coming back?
This way I can trace and lookup the proper thing.

 

No codes returned in A1 or A2, and that includes the trip down the street to get my emissions sticker (passed!). I cleared the A1 and A2 codes and put at least 15 miles on it and nothing came back. Do I need the SL solenoid instead of S1 and S2, SL = Torque Converter Lockup...

My symptoms were/still are

1) Car starts in too a high a gear (feels like 3rd).
2) Put the accelerator down, it will downshift to first where it belongs, and then un-gracefully enter second...

When coming to a stop, it will more often than most STAY in too high a gear, and get down around 500rpm (danger of stalling out) and fall into first finally, or has, on occassion, stalled out. Fluid is good.

 

Number 10 should be it.
I wanted the code to look it up and veiw all the fault tracing in the Volvo program I have.

Can anyone provide a part # for SL (and S1 and S2 while I'm at it?) or a guestimate of cost? How about install time?

I did some research and no one seemed to have had the solenoid. So, I would call a couple of vendors to see if they have them, or if they can order one for you. If they cannot, there are 3 last options I know of:

1. Dealer.
2. eBay.
3.Junk yard.

Yes indeed, you've kept it. I just don't know why so many people wouldn't want to spend mere $17 or less to buy a Haynes manual. Even though the manual is not a 1st-class quality, it can help people do 50% of servicing on their own (though those who do not have common sense shouldn't bother servicing their cars, people such as the woman who sued Mac for $1-million, or someone who put her cat in the microwave to dry him.her[8D]).

I am looking to get a Haynes and a Bentley (if available) for the 850, just have not yet... next paycheck. =) Just want to get on top of current bills (this Thursday), + whatever I've spent already in labor for the PNP (argh, still 'annoyed' that that wasn't it!) =)

Those are the Volvo part #'s.
Wasn't sure about the year of your car I looked it up for a 1996.
Labor I think is like 4 hours or so.

Should I just replaced SL, S1 and S2 all at the same time? Also, and most importantly, can I get some tips/hints on how to install? Apparently it can be done without dropping the subframe? I have access to a lift for a day as well.

Would love love love to be able to do it myself, as it should not require any special calibration or anything. I could take pics along the way and make a nice walkthrough if I get good enough installation text tips! I'll make it worth while to the community, promise!

I have always had to drop the subframe to get the cover off.
But you can drop the front of it only.
It would also be good if you could find one of the engine cradles that go from inside of fender to inside of fender. If not one of the tall jacks that are used for under cars might work as well to support the engine while you drop the front of the subframe down.
Then you will remove the top cooler line. Then remove all the screws from the pan and remove. Then you will see the soleniods. Unplug and remove the wire going to it.
Then there is one screw holding it in. Then remove the soleniod.

If you can afford it you should replace all 3 this way you don't have to pull it apart ina couple of months if it acts up again.

 

I can afford to do all three but I read there is a way to possibly do it without dropping the subframe? If I go to the shop where I can use the lift I want it to be worthwhile, otherwise I'm in a parking lot... =)
