Cost estimate for valve job after timing belt slip
Timing belt tensioner pulley failed and the belt slipped. Now I have bent valves. What price should I expect at a Volvo specialty shop to fix the bent valves? Here's the history. Car was running smoothly until just before I shut it down while pulling off the road at 10 mph. Volvo dealer R&R'd the tensioner pulley and installed a new belt, idler roller, and belt protector ($1100) to see if the valves survived w/o damage. No such luck, and the dearler wants an estimated $3500 more to fix the engine. 2000 S80 T6has 103k miles. Oh well, my usual luck with this POS S-80. Thanks,
George

RE: Cost estimate for valve job after timing belt slip
I replaced my engine for $2,200.00 (it was $3,000 by the time it left the shop, but that included new timingbelt, tensioners, water pump, radiatorand replacing all the oil seas - oil pan, oil trap, turbo lines, etc). I picked up an engine with 40K miles for $1500 (plus $700 labor). This was after the dealer quoted me $2,700.00 to fix a burnt valve. After the fact, they told me I could have just bought a new cylinder head from them with valves, etc. for $1,200.00. After spending around $5K on my 99 S80 T6 over the past 3 months or so, I have learned you can negotiate a lot with the stealers (dealers) and they will drop prices. i.e., 2 diagnostics reduced from $98.00 to $50.00, lower strut mounts from $48/ea to $30/ea, 3 coils from $67/ea to $35/ea and the last coil down to $25.00. Speak your mind and remind them that their poor workmanship is costing YOU a ton of hard-earned money. Good luck.

All this talk of timing belt and tensioner issues has me a bit edgy.. I bought my s80 as a great deal with 97,000 miles.... now im just over 100,000 miles 5 months later and im genuinely worried about the timing belt. I planned to hold off for the reccomended 105,000 miles but is this reccomended... I dont know if it makes a difference, but im a 'spirited' driver to say the least hahah

nicolaselias,
Consider yourself extremely lucky. I've found Volvo specialty shops that will do the t belt, tesioner, water pump, and idler for $500 bucks. I waited to 90,000 miles and am now faced with engine/ valve assembly replacement, way more costly that the timing belt service. DO IT Immediately!!

RE: Cost estimate for valve job after timing belt slip
Ok, now im really terrified.. I cant do the work on the belt until atleast 10 days from today... I have a crazy schedule coming up and I wanted to let everything be done on the car at once when the time came, not to keep splitting it.. The mechanic is about 15 or 20 mins from me and the dealer is about 30 So i want to make as few trips as is possible..
The thing is, for all I know the belt could have been changed by the previous owner as it appears he took realtively decent care of the car... I got the car from a dealer but i have alot of his bills and so on from the car... i searched for him on the county sheriffs dept website, and apparently he had a DUI, then was caught driving the s80 without a license... hence the reason he sold it/was repod... i guess the latter...
Anway, i still wanted to get the mech to take a look at it..
Where would I be able to get the pulleys, tensioners and the belt at the best price? Assistance will be apreciated.
Thanks
If it comes to it, I can always take the drive up to orlando to visit Tech's place and let him do it depending on how things are looking...
I wonder whats the cost from him.. hmm
I dont really know any volvo specialists in tampa, even though there have to be some..

RE: Cost estimate for valve job after timing belt slip
Any of you (namely tech or anyone in florida) ever heard of a Volvo speciality shop in tampa named Mike's Automotiove? From what im seeing, its the only actual volvo specialty shop.. Im thinking to give them a call to get a reasonable estimate on jobs such as the timing belt and so on...
I doubt they will be able to do the software upgrades I need so I guess il have to once again find myself at the dealer..

RE: Cost estimate for valve job after timing belt slip
Im now thinking of it, is it just that volvos have a tendency for the timing belt and associated parts to go bad, or was I just extremely lucky with my accord? We did over 150,000 miles on that car before changing the belt and pulleys and so on, and we didnt actually need to, was just a precautionary measure. Iv seen sites where i can gt all the parts for the timing belt job for under 150, ... how much should labour add to that?
Thanks

RE: Cost estimate for valve job after timing belt slip
Well its something il look into ASAP.. At least to get it checked to see the condition of the belt.. I suspect my serpentine belt needs changing also, im seeing some small cuts and fraying in it but nothing too too serious as yet... Anyway, thanks for all the help and adivce so far... one last thing, if im doing the timing belt work, il need the belt, the pulley, the tensioner... anything else?
