Default Rain sensor on windshield wipers

I've got a set of non-Volvo wiper blades on my 2006 S60, and I've noticed that the rain sensor is WAY off. Sometimes they'll be no rain on the windshield and the wipers are going like crazy. Is that a bad sensor or does it need Volvo wiper blades in order to work properly?

sensor is actually in the wind shield if I recall so I would think its the sensor that is going south.

If that sensor is dirty could it affect the operation of it? That's what the dealership told me when they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

They ended up applying a software update, and that seems to have helped.

There are three different sensors according to the dealer in Iowa City....
I had a windshield replaced by Safelite and they replaced it with the wrong sensor... it would just work as a manual delay with 3 settings and would never stop if the rain stopped...
Make sure they get the VIN number before replacing the front windshield glass..
