I need to remove the gas pedal assembly so I can replace the heater hose coupling assembly at the firewall. I see the two bolts that hold the pedal to the firewall underneath the pedal hinge but don't see how to remove the gas pedal to get at the 2 bolts.

 

There should be a hex bolt holding the pedal to the bracket. I don't remember having to take it off though. I was pretty sure you could get to the bolts without removing it.

 

pop the pivot pin for the pedal to the left. I just moves over a couple millimeters. That will release the actual pedal. Then you can get to the bolts.

Once the pedal is out you can pull the carpet back. Get a towel because your going to have a bit of a river when you pull the lines. The pipes that go into the firewall have the same quick releases that are on the hoses in the engine compartment. Be sure to push in before you squeeze them so you dont break anything. The bottom of the pipes will be held in the heater core by a single screw between the pipes. Once out you can slide the pipes out.
The whole thing in held into place by the heater core. If you remove the screws on both sides of the top of the plastic heater core container the core will drop down and that will release all the pipes...and the river. You can release the pipes from the firewall.
If you are only replacing the coupling that goes through the firewall you only need to release the heater core by the two screws (drivers/passengers) that hold the core in. Dont release the pipes from the core if you dont need too, dont want to mess with the seal. You can manouver the core with the pipes attached enough to get the firewall part out.

Over all when I did this I was thinking it was going to be a horrible job. Turned out to be a 3 on the scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the hardest.

Thanks - The heater coupler bracket plastic couplings just cracked and failed with age. I got the new heater hoses and they are all brass & copper fittings mounting into plastic coupler. FCP had the part in stock and this along with a new heater core should resolve whiff of anti feeze that occurs when the heater is first turned on. I found another site which gave guidance to just snap loose the swivel at the top of the gas pedal assembly and then push the pedal to the floor. This allows just enough wiggle room behind the pedal to romove and replace the heater hose coupling from the firewall.
