Default volvo won't pass PA inspection because 'check engine' light is on...

I bought a 96 850 in 2008 in kentucky and had a new engine put in a week later. The guys at the Volvo shop brought to my attention that the 'check engine' light was on, but there was no problem, it just wouldnt go off. I don't know why they didnt reset it, but they didnt and they said there were no problems. However, now I am living in Pennsylvania and I am trying to get the car inspected but the guys at the shop said that they cant pass my car because the check engine light is on and they cant tell what it means. They want me to take it to a transi shop and pay big $$ to have them fix the car in order for it to pass inspection, but I have been looking around online at possible reasons for the 'check engine' light to come on and it seams like something the guys at this shop in PA should have no problem figuring out....I found out lots of reasons why the light is on, for instance the transition fluid level could be low or needs to be changed. is this really something that the PA auto shop guys cant fix to pass my car for inspection?

The CEL will not come on due to any type of fluid being low or needing to be changed. I use to work in Pennsylvania and had my Inspection and Emission license and know that with the CEL ON, the OBD2 emission inspection will not pass with the light on. You will need to get it fixed and turned off to get it pass inspection.

Did anyone pull the codes from the OBD-II connection? What are they.

My question to you is, why didn't you have them just reset it? Or would the PA guys not do that and pass the car.

I live in PA, but never had any problems getting my 850 or S70 inspected.

Secondly I agree did anyone take code readings from the OBDII? If so what where they.

If you reset the light and attempt to pass it through OBD2 emissions, it will reject/fail the car because the adaptations are not set. Basicly it knows what you are trying to do and says no way.
