AM band doesn't work at all; FM/CD/Sirius all fine.
The radio in my 2008 S40 T5 was working fine until Monday when I started my car and couldn't get the AM band working at all - no sound, no static, no nothing.
The AM band won't lock in when I scan for available stations, but the odd thing is there is no static at all - total silence.
When the problem first happened, I fidgeted with a couple things (roof antenna, slight punch to the radio) and got some static-filled AM reception for a few moments, but since then no sound at all.
The FM band, Sirius and my CD player all work fine.
I live near a major city so reception is never a problem.
I didn't use the car over the weekend so nothing I did damaged the connections. I also double checked the rear window antenna and everything seems fine.
On the phone, the dealership indicated I might have a defective AM/FM module that would cost $800-$900 to replace. I'm out of warranty due to high mileage and no way want to pay that kind of money, but I really would like my AM stations back.
Any ideas?

I had the identical problem in my '08 S40. AM stations had static, as if the station was slightly out of tune, and within 2-3 days it had faded to complete silence. FM and Sirius had no issues. The AM/FM module had gone bad and needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, I'm not sure there is another solution.

FOB,
Thanks for the reply. Did your warranty cover it? If not, did you dispute the issue with Volvo at all and what did it ultimately say?
I took the car into the dealership today and they ran a diagnostic which confirmed a faulty AM module. I'm hopeful Volvo will stand behind the problem and cover it even though I'm slightly out of warranty due to high mileage.

2008 S-40 AM Radio problem
I've had the exact same problem occur. Suddenly I have no AM reception at all, yet FM, CD, and Sirus are fine? Very strange. I initially thought I had accidently reprogramed something in one of the menus. The car is only 2 years old. Seems that this is a common problem with Volvo AM radios?

Dear all Crouch, FOB and Donenc:
I recently have had the same problem in my very low millage 2008 S40.
One year after your useful posts : have anybody some hints to discuss with the local dealer the obvious manufacture defect of the IAM module?
AM total failure seems to be a general issue in this car.
Thanks in advance
Cesarg

Same problem in '06 C70 module
All-
Yes, it does seem that Volvo has an issue with its AM modules. The same thing happened to me in 2010 in my '06 C70 Volvo. I was overseas at the time and could live without AM radio; however, now that I'm back stateside, really miss the radio. Don't see a response to Mike or Cesarg's questions so I'm going to print this forum thread off and go to the local dealer to see if they'll stand behind their products. Will let you know how it turns out.

After a big battle with my dealer and pulling some strings a couple years ago, Volvo agreed to replace my AM module even though I was slightly out of warranty (mileage wise, not time wise). Problem is, now my AM stations are starting to become very static-filled again and I'm wondering if the new module is going bad too.
