Is the procedure for changing a timing belt on an 01 XC 70 basically the same as it would be to change it on an earlier model?

The reason I ask is that in about 6 months the timing belt on the wife's 01 XC70 will be due. I just changed the belt, all rollers and tensioners on my kids 95 850 turbo and it was fairly easy. From the looks of it the motors are basically the same, so I was wondering if the procedure is the same.

It is for the most part the same.
If you can try to get ahold of a Cam pulley lock tool. That holds the pulleys when the Belt is off.
The newer cars have the VVT setup on them.

The tensioner is a little different as well. It has a mechanical tensioner. Which looks complicated but is easy to set.

When I do the change on the wife's car it will only have 70 K on it, but the belt will be about 6 years old. My plan is to change the timing belt, water pump, and serpentine belt only on this first change, and then on the next change replace all the rollers and tensioners as well.

Does this sound like a good plan from your expertise, or should I shoot the nickle and change everything at 70 K.

When I did the boys 850, it had 175K on it and I replaced all the belts, rollers, and tensioners. The rollers and tensioners looked original (probably were).

Last question, I have a good step by step procedure for changing the belt on an 850, is there a good step by step available for the XC70, or do you know of anywhere that talks about setting the mechanical tensioner?

Do the pulleys NOW.

I have seen them come apart at 60K

They are reccomended to be changed at 80k from the Dealer.

Read that about half way down it tells you about setting the tensioner.

Also if you can search E-bay and buy a program called Vadis it will tell you just about every you need to know about working on both of the Volvo's you own.

I'm debating on doing my timing belt my self or by a shop on my 99xc. I was wondering what I might expect to pay to get it done? At the moment I'm working my *ss off. If it cost TOO much i'll do it myself. THANKS AHEAD

 

It should be somewhere around $370.00 or so for Parts and labor with the tensioner and ilder replaced.

 

Tech, would you recommend water pump aswell? My car has 100k on it.

 

When I do the job I inspect the Water pump really good. There is a metal plug in the aluminum housing. When they go bad they usually leak from the metal plug. If there is any corrosion or green around the plug replace. If not leave it alone.

I have seen the factory pump go to about 200,000 before having to be replaced.

Well, this post is about 6 weeks old, but I am ready to start getting the parts on order and get the job started.

Here is my parts list and plans, please let me know if I left out anything.

Plan: Change timing belt, tensioner, and pulleys. Change serpentine belt, tensioner and pulleys, inpsect water pump throughly, and change (if needed), change coolant, thermostat, and all hoses.

Parts to order: timing belt, timing belt tensioner, timing belt idler pulley, serpentine belt, serpentine belt tensioner, serpentine belt pulley, upper and lower radiator hoses, coolant and thermostat.

Sound good?? BTW, the car is an 01 XC70 with 60K on the clock. Yes I know, the belt is supposed to go 70K but I am changing it as it is almost 6 years old.

Final question. Out of the parts list above, are there any you suspect will not need to be changed, and also, do ALL 01's have the mechanical tensioner, or will I have to take it apart to check?
