Default Alternative to VST and A ? for tech about OBD System

If any of you out the want to know an AFFORDABLE alternative to the Volvo Scan Tool or VST would be a product developed by AUTOLAND SCIENTECH Model # D91 http://www.autolandscientechusa.com/index1.htm Called the i-Scan distributed by Baum Tools http://www.baumtools.com/. The salesman notified me by email that their i-Scan is in the works for working with VADIS. I do not know when they plan to implement the update to the tool though, but this will be quite handy !!! Right now the i-Scan with the Volvo kit is used as a standalone unit just like the VST. Retail from Baum with latest Volvo kit software version was quoted to me for $$4395.00 S/H Incl LOL. I think Volvo sells the VST for around the same price. However there is a dealer on ebay who sells it with the volvo kit called the V-Scan, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT, for $995 S/H incl. Now that's a deal especially if they make the update to work with VADIS. I know I'm gonna start saving my pennies to get one. I sound like a salesmen for all of these guys, I'm not though, if I were I'd have one myself by now ! However I see this product as a good investment for those of you who want full access to you 98 70 series and other older volvos. For those of you who don't know the VCT2000 or Volvo Communications Tool 2000 only works on 1999 Volvos years and up, apparently for a "CAN system," which now comes my question for you tech. I figure, if you don't know you might know the right person to talk to to find this info out for me. I am interested to find out what sub-bus system is used in the 1998 70 series cars. Is it a Lin Bus system, a Lin/CAN sub-bus system, or am I way off ? I know the Bosch came out with CAN I think I read somewhere around 1992-93 ? not to sure. But I know that a lin bus system was endorsed by Volvo in 1998 when they joined the consortium for LIN BUS amongst other euro makers. I'm interested in this because I don't see why there couldn't be a way to access and obtain all data past generic OBDII like SRS, ABS,... etc with like a LIN BUS/CAN PCI card. I know that the 98's protocol is 9141-2 and the pins in the DLC support this. However, I am trying to understand the network of the cars computers. I noticed there were like 2 pins in the DLC that were manufacture specific, any insight ? Any info you have would be helpful. I try and do my homework on this stuff, I'm not a professional. So Tech please correct me anywhere I'm wrong. But does the car communicate to each of the computers in a lin bus network, a lin bus/can bus network or something totally different through the ISO 9141-2 OBDII port ?

It is supposed to be a Can network.

But it wasn't applied till the 1999 cars.
The 1998 cars were not networked.
