Boot not closing and idle problems

Boot not closing and idle problems
I have a 2001 Volvo S80 2.0 Turbo. This morning, I took a bag out of the boot, closed the lid and it refused to catch. I had to drive to work with the bootlid held down by nothing but gravity. Any ideas on why it is not catching in the lock, there is nothing blocking the struts or the rubber seals.
Also, an intermittent problem which I think might be a regular fault of the of the S80. When i am sitting at traffic lights with the car in Drive, occasionally the engine will rev up to 1500 before returning back to a more regular idle. It happens more often when I am trying to reverse into a parking space and using the brake.
Finally, any tips for getting better economy out of the car would be greatly appreciated. Even with a light right foot I am only getting 25 mpg.
Thanks
